Today I'm giving thanks for Melissa Kwan, formerly the co-founder and CEO of Spacio.
I first met Melissa at a conference in 2015. We had been thinking about building our own open house registration app at HomeSpotter and when I saw she had launched one I approached her with the idea that maybe we should buy it. Ultimately- the timing then wasn’t right.
Later, she invited me to a dinner with a bunch of real estate tech founders and Spencer Rascoff, then CEO of Zillow. I was impressed that she was able to pull together that room of individuals in short order with no network to start with. In the years that followed, we became friends and teed up intros for each other where we could be helpful.
In mid 2018, at HomeSpotter we were getting serious about doing our first acquisition. I had a list of potential acquisition targets that included Spacio. Things aligned when Melissa mentioned she was exploring her options to potentially sell.
While many aspects of the acquisition made sense for both parties, it still involved a leap of faith on her part as our offer included a mix of upfront cash, earn out, bonuses, and stock. Ultimately, she had to trust that HomeSpotter stock would be worth more than just a straight cash offer in the end.
Melissa- thank you for taking that leap and trusting me with the sale. And- we have bigger things still in store for Spacio at Lone Wolf!
