Today I'm giving thanks for Rod Tompkins.
My career trajectory would likely be in a very different spot if it wasn’t for Rod.
I was fortunate to work with Rod during a summer away from college at a K-12 edtech startup. I was fortunate to be able to continue working there when I returned to school – before remote work was really ‘a thing’. The next spring, I approached Rod with the idea I had for another venture, which he was quick to get behind. Three short years later, we sold that spinoff startup – altonaEd – to Pearson Education.
Years later, after I had launched what would become HomeSpotter, I approached Rod about the idea of investing in it. He was a quick commit. Having Rod’s investment and vote of confidence helped as a catalyst to kick off the rest of the fundraise. It was a good narrative to be able to go to other potential investors and mention Rod’s success on my first startup and the fact that he was the first money in on the next one.
Rod continued investing more across many of our rounds. I was very fortunate to have earned Rod’s trust and happy I could provide a healthy return through the sale.
Rod- thank you for your belief in me and for your support. And, my kids also thank you – your annual 4th of July fireworks shows are second to none.
