Today I’m giving thanks for Brian Bethke. Brian was the first true full time employee to sign on with what was then called Mobile Realty Apps - in April 2011.
While office-less work has become more of a norm in 2021, it wasn’t much of a thing in 2011. My pitch to a soon to be college grad was probably odd at the time: a) we don’t have an office yet, b) you’re going to be the first employee, and c) I think I can get you to full time work soon, but I’m not sure. Somehow Brian saw past that, joined up, and he was full time from day 1 after all.
I then found some very cheap coworking space in Minneapolis at a place that no longer exists. Brian and I still laugh about that space today. Favorite memories include that you needed to request tokens from a specific person to make coffee in the Keurig and the once a week laughing yoga session in the middle of this very small coworking space. (And no, we never participated.)
Brian was a key contributor with us for the next 6.5 years during times of crazy growth and times of unfortunate retraction. He eventually took on the role of lead iOS engineer and oversaw some significant rewrites and improvements of our Connect product. He also had a number of contributions to Boost when the product was in its infancy.
Brian- thank you for taking an early bet on me and for all your contributions. It’s been a joy to see you grow in your career.
